Model Year vs Production Date for Chinese Export Cars

A simple distinction that matters when describing a vehicle, checking documents and comparing quotations.

Read the name and the date separately

The model year is part of the marketed vehicle version. It is not proof of the year in which an individual car was built. The source briefing uses a 2025 Model SEALION 05 EV produced in May 2026 to show the distinction.

Make the quotation comparable

Confirm the model year and trim in the quotation, then use the manufacturer's plate and vehicle documents to check the actual production date. Keeping both fields clear helps avoid describing different vehicles as equivalent offers.

Where to verify the actual production date

Use the model year to identify the marketed version, then verify the physical vehicle separately. Check the manufacturer plate and the vehicle documents supplied for the transaction. Ask the exporter to connect those records to the quoted unit before payment. A model-year label alone does not confirm when that individual vehicle left the factory.

How to compare two export quotations

Put both offers on the same basis: model year, trim, powertrain, battery or range version, production date, vehicle status and included export services. If one field is missing, the two prices may describe different vehicles. Written confirmation protects the buyer from treating a newer production unit and an older-stock unit as equivalent.

Questions importers ask

Can a 2025 model be produced in 2026?

Yes. The model year identifies a marketed version and does not always match the calendar year in which an individual vehicle was produced.

What should an importer check before payment?

Confirm the exact trim and model year in writing, then verify the production date on the manufacturer plate and transaction documents for the quoted vehicle.
